Gerrit de Jager
1954–
Gerrit de Jager was born in Amsterdam in 1954 and has spent nearly five decades establishing himself as one of the Netherlands' most prolific and versatile cartoonists. His career stretches from 1978 through the present day, encompassing work as a writer, artist, inker, colorist, and letterer across more than 340 issues — a breadth of involvement that speaks to a deeply hands-on approach to the craft.
He is best known as the creator of *De familie Doorzon*, a long-running Dutch comic series that became a fixture in the country's comics landscape and was published extensively in *Margriet*, among other outlets. Beyond that flagship work, de Jager originated several other series, including *Liefde en geluk*, *Zusje*, and *Roel en zijn Beestenboel*, the latter also appearing under the title *Roel en zijn beestenboel* in his catalog. His work reached French-language audiences as well, with *Aristote et ses potes* among his internationally adapted titles. He also contributed to *Sjors en Sjimmie Stripblad*, one of the better-known Dutch comics magazines.
De Jager's style tends toward warm, character-driven humor rooted in everyday domestic and social life. His sustained productivity and the domestic popularity of *De familie Doorzon* in particular cement his place as a significant figure in Dutch comics history.
