François Bourgeon
1945–
François Bourgeon was born on 5 July 1945 in Paris, France. He is best known as a master of the Franco-Belgian bande dessinée tradition, working as an artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer across 130 issues from 1979 to 2025. His most celebrated work is the historical adventure series *Les Passagers du vent* (also known as *Reisende im Wind* and *Resande med vinden*), which follows the journey of a young woman named Isa through the 18th-century slave trade and French Revolution. Bourgeon’s signature style combines meticulous historical research with lush, painterly watercolor washes and expressive, naturalistic character design. He frequently collaborated with writer and colorist Jean-Claude Floc’h on the *Les Passagers du vent* series, though Bourgeon himself wrote and drew the majority of his output. Among his notable co-creations is the science-fiction series *Les Compagnons du crépuscule*, which he both wrote and illustrated. Later in his career, Bourgeon continued to work on standalone graphic novels and contributed to anthologies such as *Cimoc Extra Color*. He received multiple awards, including the Grand Prix de la Ville d’Angoulême in 1986, and his work remains a benchmark for historical realism in European comics. Bourgeon’s legacy endures through his influence on later BD artists and the continued reprinting of his classic series.
