Augusti 1781. Isa och hennes medresenärer är ombord på slavskeppet Marie-Caroline med en besättning om mindre än trettio man. I dess lastrum finns 340 slavar, män, kvinnor och barn, som kallas "ebenholtsvirke". Överfarten till Saint-Domingue (nuvarande Haiti) kommer att ta cirka tre månader.
