On the French warship Foudroyant, years before the revolution, sailor Hoel forms an unexpected bond with Isa, a young woman disguised as a man. Their quiet moments aboard the ship unfold with quiet intensity, where trust and secrecy drift like smoke through the rigging.

In September 1780, Hoel and the ship’s surgeon Michel de Saint Quentin are imprisoned aboard an old vessel repurposed as a floating pontoon, anchored in a muddy bank near Chatham. Meanwhile, Isa, granted temporary leave in England, has formed a quiet friendship with Mary Hereford.

In Maj 1781, aboard the slave ship Marie-Caroline under Captain Boisboeuf, Isa, Hoel, Mary, John, and their daughter Enora sail toward the "Slavkusten." Their journey takes a grim turn when the ship must stop at the trading post of Juda in the Kingdom of Dahomey to acquire and stock more enslaved people.

In August 1781, aboard the slaver Marie-Caroline, Isa travels with a small crew and 340 enslaved people—referred to as "ebenholtsvirke"—on a three-month voyage to Saint-Domingue. The cramped, brutal conditions of the ship become a crucible for survival, secrets, and the fragile bonds that form in the face of unimaginable hardship.
