Ben Dunn was born on April 17, 1964, and has built one of the more distinctive careers in independent American comics, working simultaneously as an artist, writer, colorist, inker, and letterer across more than four decades of continuous output.
Dunn got his start in 1984 and quickly became a central figure in the small-press boom that gave rise to a wave of creator-owned titles during the late 1980s. He is perhaps best known as the driving force behind *Ninja High School*, a long-running series that blended manga-influenced art with comedic science fiction and high school hijinks. The title was among the earliest American comics to earnestly adopt a manga-inflected visual sensibility, and it became a cornerstone of Antarctic Press, the Texas-based publisher Dunn co-founded. His work there gave him an unusually broad platform — he has credits spanning artist, writer, colorist, inker, and letterer roles across more than 400 issues.
Beyond *Ninja High School* and its several spin-off volumes and color editions, Dunn co-created *Warrior Nun Areala*, a fan-favorite concept that proved durable enough to inspire adaptations well beyond comics. His prolific output and willingness to wear nearly every creative hat on a given project reflect both the scrappy ethos of independent publishing and a genuine versatility that has kept him active into the mid-2020s.
