Antonio Segura was a Spanish comics writer best known for his gritty, imaginative work in European horror and adventure comics. Born on June 13, 1947, in Valencia, Spain, he began his career in the late 1970s, contributing to the Spanish underground scene before gaining international recognition. His path into comics was shaped by a love of genre fiction, and he quickly became a key figure in the revival of horror comics in Spain. Segura is most famous for co-creating the post-apocalyptic series *Hombre* with artist José Ortiz, a brutal, visually striking saga that ran for years in magazines like *Creepy* and *L'Eternauta*. He also wrote extensively for the Italian market, notably on *Maxi Tex* and *Magnum*, and his work often blended dark fantasy with social commentary. His signature style was lean, dialogue-driven, and unflinching, favoring bleak settings and morally complex characters. Among his notable collaborations were long partnerships with artists such as Ortiz and Alfonso Font. Segura’s later life saw him continue writing for European anthologies until his death on January 31, 2012, in Valencia. He received several awards, including the prestigious Haxtur Prize for Best Writer, and his influence endures in the Spanish and Italian comic traditions, where his stories remain touchstones of mature genre storytelling.
