Andy Mangels
Andy Mangels, born December 2, 1966, is an American writer and editor best known for his work in licensed comics and his long-standing advocacy for LGBTQ+ representation in the medium. His comic-writing career, active from 1991 to 2003, saw him credited on 58 issues, with most of his work appearing in *Gay Comics*, *Child's Play: The Series*, *ElfQuest: Blood of Ten Chiefs*, *Bloodwulf*, and the *Nightmares on Elm Street* series. He also wrote the novelization for *Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare*.
An openly gay man, Mangels has coordinated and moderated the annual "Gays in Comics" panel at San Diego Comic-Con since its inception in 1988, a role that has made him a central figure in the push for greater visibility of gay and lesbian characters in comics. He also founded "Women of Wonder Day," a seven-year event that raised over $136,000 for domestic violence shelters. Beyond comics, he has written science fiction novels and magazine articles, and produced DVD collections focusing on pop culture. As of 2011, three of his books had appeared on the *USA Today* bestseller list.
