André-Paul Duchâteau
André-Paul Duchâteau was a Belgian comics writer and mystery novelist born on 8 May 1925, who went on to become one of the most prolific figures in the Franco-Belgian comics tradition before his death on 26 August 2020. His career in the medium stretched an remarkable six-plus decades, from 1952 through 2019, during which he accumulated writing credits on more than 400 issues across a wide range of titles.
He is perhaps best remembered for his work on *Ric Hochet* and *Rick Master* — long-running series that showcased his affinity for crime and suspense storytelling, a sensibility he carried equally into his parallel career as a mystery novelist. Other notable titles bearing his name include *Tempo*, *Hans*, *De Brokkenmakers*, and *Les Casseurs*, the latter two reflecting the breadth of his reach across both French- and Dutch-language readerships.
Duchâteau belonged to a generation of Belgian writers who shaped the adventure and detective comic strip into a distinctly European art form, and his sustained output across so many decades speaks to a disciplined, inventive craftsman rather than a fleeting talent. His work remains a substantial part of the Franco-Belgian comics canon, representing a career defined by consistency, genre versatility, and quiet longevity.
