Who is Ryoko Hakubi?

Ryoko Hakubi is a space pirate and demon from the Tenchi Muyo! universe — a powerful, reckless humanoid created by the genius scientist Washu — who crash-lands near Tenchi Masaki's home and becomes entangled in his chaotic life alongside rival Jurai princess Ayeka.

Ryoko Hakubi made her English-language comics debut in Viz's Mangazine #34 in 1994, arriving at the cusp of the Modern Age when manga was beginning to find its passionate Western audience. She shares her pages with a memorable ensemble — Tenchi Masaki, Mihoshi Kuramitsu, Washu Hakubi, and the Jurai royals Ayeka and Sasami — a cast that made No Need for Tenchi one of the era's most beloved manga imports. With appearances also spanning Ranma 1/2 and Mangazine, she's a charming piece of that late-'90s Viz golden moment when adventurous readers were discovering the breadth and wit of Japanese comics for the first time.
