Peter the Penis
Peter the Penis is a brazenly irreverent underground comix character from Last Gasp's anything-goes anthology Weirdo, embodying the unfiltered, taboo-breaking spirit of the underground movement. Beyond his anatomical premise and outrageous attitude, little canonical backstory is established.
Leave it to the anarchic pages of Last Gasp's Weirdo to introduce a character as brazenly irreverent as Peter the Penis β debuting in 1981's Weirdo #3, brought to life by James Boswell and the legendary R. Crumb at the height of the underground comix movement's Bronze Age swagger. A product of that gloriously unfiltered world where nothing was too outrageous for the page, Peter shares his wild anthology home with the likes of Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Dori Seda, and Trashman β a murderers' row of underground talent that tells you everything about the irreverent, boundary-obliterating spirit Weirdo embodied. With six catalog appearances concentrated in that early-'80s run, Peter is a compact, punchy artifact of a moment when alternative comics delighted in shocking the mainstream β a curiosity well worth tracking down for any serious collector of the underground scene.
