Gilbert Hernandez introduced David to readers in the pages of Love and Rockets #35 in 1991 — and that very debut is recognized as a key issue, making his entrance into the Fantagraphics universe one worth marking in any serious collection. A Copper Age creation from one of alternative comics' most celebrated titles, David moves through a world populated by a richly drawn cast that includes Peter Rio, Rex Walker, Fermin Rio, Sean Ogata, and Danita Lincoln. His appearances are few and carefully placed, which is very much in the spirit of Hernandez's storytelling — where every character, however briefly glimpsed, feels like a real person with a life extending beyond the panel's edge.
