Woyzeck

In this 2019 one-shot from Edition 52, writer and artist Andreas Eikenroth adapts Georg Büchner's classic, unfinished 19th-century play into a stark, expressionistic comic. The story follows the titular soldier, a man ground down by poverty and military life, as he descends into madness and violence. Eikenroth's haunting, scratchy linework and shadowy compositions capture the raw, psychological intensity of the source material, making this a potent example of literary adaptation in the European comics tradition.
