Wonder Wart-Hog

Gilbert Shelton’s Wonder Wart-Hog is a satirical underground comic that launched from Millar Publishing Company in 1967, lampooning superhero tropes with a crude, countercultural edge. Over its brief two-issue run (and continuing sporadically since), Shelton wrote and drew the adventures of a porcine, flatulent antihero who parodies both Superman and the era’s political absurdities. A foundational work of the underground comix movement, it showcases Shelton’s irreverent, freewheeling style before he became synonymous with the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. Its lasting influence lies in its fearless, lowbrow humor and its role in pushing the boundaries of what comics could satirize.
