About the series
Witzend was a landmark independent comic anthology published by Real Free Press from 1969 to 1971, running just four issues. Conceived largely by Wally Wood—who also contributed his distinctive, meticulous art—the series served as a vital showcase for underground and experimental work, free from the constraints of mainstream comics. It featured a rotating roster of talent including Vaughn Bodé, Al Feldstein, and Martin Beumer, with Bodé's bold, psychedelic style becoming a defining visual signature. This short-lived but influential title helped bridge the gap between commercial comics and the emerging underground comix movement, offering a glimpse of what the medium could achieve with true creative freedom.
