About the series

In the late 1980s, Kitchen Sink Press published Twist, a three-issue anthology that adapted Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist into a gritty, satirical comics form. The series was a showcase for the darkly humorous talents of Harvey Kurtzman, Josh Alan Friedman, and Drew Friedman, who reimagined the classic tale with a raw, underground edge. Richard Sala also contributed artwork, helping to cement the book’s distinctive, off-kilter visual style. It remains a curious, cult artifact of its era, blending literary adaptation with the irreverent spirit of alternative comics.
