About the series
In the late 1970s, Marvel UK launched The Savage Sword of Conan, a black-and-white magazine-sized series that expanded the Hyborian Age adventures beyond the color comics of the day. Running for 93 issues until 1985, it became a showcase for Roy Thomas’s definitive scripting of Robert E. Howard’s barbarian, paired with the dynamic, gritty pencils of John Buscema and the atmospheric painted covers of Earl Norem. The series mattered for its mature, unflinching tone and sprawling epics, offering a grittier, more visceral take on Conan that influenced the sword-and-sorcery genre for years.
