Tales of Toad
The Print Mint Inc · 1970–1971 · 2 issues
About the series
In this brief, two-issue series from The Print Mint Inc, Bill Griffith introduced the world to the amphibian anti-hero Toad, a cynical, lazy, and perpetually hungry character who embodied the slacker ethos of the early 1970s underground comix scene. Published between 1970 and 1971, Tales of Toad showcased Griffith's distinctive, loose linework and deadpan humor, offering a satirical take on consumer culture and suburban ennui. Though short-lived, the series is a key early work in Griffith's career, preceding his more famous creation, Zippy the Pinhead, and cementing his voice as a leading figure in the underground comix movement.
