About the series
In 2008-2009, Marvel published Sub-Mariner: The Depths, a five-issue miniseries that reimagines the Sub-Mariner as a terrifying, almost Lovecraftian force of nature. Written by Peter Milligan with haunting, painterly art by Esad Ribić, the story follows a skeptical naval expedition into the Mariana Trench to disprove the existence of Atlantis and its king, Namor. Rather than a superhero adventure, it’s a slow-burn psychological horror thriller that challenges the reader’s perception of the classic character, treating the ocean itself as an alien world. This series stands out for its claustrophobic atmosphere and Ribić’s stunning visuals, offering a unique, mature take on the Prince of Atlantis.
