Set six years after Return of the Jedi, Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy's Star Wars: Dark Empire (1993–1995) from Dark Horse Comics plunged the galaxy into a new era of conflict, with a resurrected Emperor Palpatine wielding terrifying new Force powers. Kennedy's vivid, painted-style artwork gave this grim, post-Rebellion saga a distinctive look, while Veitch's story expanded the mythology of the Force in ways that would ripple through the Expanded Universe for years. Though a single-issue series in its original format, its ambitious scope and dark tone made it a landmark of the early Dark Horse Star Wars line.
