In the late 1970s, Pontius Comics published Special, a seven-issue series that served as a showcase for offbeat, creator-driven stories outside the mainstream. The title is most associated with the distinctive, often surreal work of writer/artist Dave Sim, whose early experiments here foreshadowed his later independent landmark. While the series itself was short-lived, it captured a transitional moment in comics when small publishers began giving talented newcomers room to develop their own voices.
