Schwermetall
Volksverlag · 1980–1984 · 57 issues
From 1980 to 1984, the German publisher Volksverlag released 57 issues of Schwermetall, a science-fiction and fantasy anthology series that served as the German-language counterpart to Heavy Metal. The magazine became a vital showcase for European and American talent, most notably featuring the surreal, visceral work of Richard Corben—who also wrote many stories—alongside the kinetic art of Sergio Macedo and the visionary linework of Moebius. With contributions from writer Jan Strnad and a rotating cast of international artists, Schwermetall brought a distinctly adult, psychedelic edge to the comics medium, cementing its place as a cult touchstone of the early-80s underground.
