About the series
Marvel’s Savage Tales (1971–1975) was a landmark black-and-white magazine that launched the company’s foray into more mature, horror-tinged storytelling, blending sword-and-sorcery epics with grim adventure. Most often associated with the talents of Roy Thomas, Stan Lee, and Robert E. Howard’s prose, the series showcased vivid artwork from Barry Smith, John Buscema, and Alfredo Alcala across its 11-issue run. It mattered as a bold, pre-Comics Code experiment that gave creators room for darker, more visceral narratives, helping to define Marvel’s 1970s magazine line.
