About the series
A landmark of German-language comics publishing, Sach-Comic (1979–1987) was a 22-issue series from Rowohlt that pioneered the use of the comic medium for nonfiction. Each volume tackled a historical or scientific subject—from Freud to quantum physics—through a blend of clear, researched text and expressive artwork, most frequently by writers Ulf Dammann, Stephen Croall, and Richard Appignanesi, and artists Philip Evans, Oscar Zárate, and Nigel Paige. The series helped establish the "graphic novel" as a serious educational tool in Europe, proving that complex ideas could be made accessible and engaging through sequential art.
