Rodolphe Töpffer's pioneering 19th-century picture-stories, collected here as komische Bilder-Romane, laid the very groundwork for the modern comic. Published posthumously by Paul Neff starting in 1887, this series preserves the Swiss artist's satirical, hand-lettered narratives, which blend sequential art and social commentary. As one of the earliest sustained comic series in print, it remains a foundational artifact for understanding the medium's origins.
