About the series
J. Michael Straczynski’s Rising Stars (1999–2005, Image) is a 26-issue superhero saga that explores what happens when 113 "Specials"—children born with extraordinary abilities after a mysterious cosmic event—grow up and reshape the world. Rather than focusing on costumed heroics, the series delves into the political, ethical, and personal consequences of superpowers in a society that fears and exploits them. With art by Christian Zanier, Ken Lashley, and Brent Anderson, and a story seeded by a concept from Neil Gaiman, it stands as a thoughtful, character-driven deconstruction of the genre during the late-1990s boom in creator-owned comics.
