Reizen en avonturen van mijnheer Prikkebeen
In 1938, the Dutch publisher H. J. W. Becht released a single collected edition of Reizen en avonturen van mijnheer Prikkebeen, a comic strip that had been running for decades. This volume gathers the work of writer J. J. A. Goeverneur and artist Cham, who adapted and expanded upon the original 1840s picture-story by Swiss pioneer Rodolphe Töpffer (who is also credited as both writer and artist for his foundational contribution). While technically a one-issue publication, the book served as a definitive Dutch-language compilation of a beloved 19th-century comic classic, preserving Töpffer’s influential blend of sequential art and satirical travelogue for a modern audience. It matters as a key artifact in the history of European comics, bridging the early picture-stories of Töpffer with the later Dutch comic tradition.
