Popeye the Sailor
Western · 1978–1984 · 31 issues
About the series
In the late 1970s, Western Publishing revived the iconic spinach-chomping sailor for a new comic series, Popeye the Sailor, which ran for 31 issues from 1978 to 1984. With Bud Sagendorf—the legendary artist who had long defined the character’s look—joined by regular writers Bill Pearson and Nicola Cuti, and artists like George Wildman and Joe Sinnott, the series kept Popeye, Olive Oyl, Swee'Pea, Brutus, Wimpy, and the wonderfully named O. G. Wotasnozzle in classic, family-friendly adventures. This run stands as a late-era highlight for the character, maintaining the wholesome, gag-driven spirit of the newspaper strips while introducing a new generation to the squinty-eyed hero.
