About the series
From 1987 to 1991, Fragments West published Penguin & Pencilguin, an offbeat eight-issue series that paired the whimsical cartooning of Phil Yeh with the rubbery, expressive linework of Sergio Aragonés. Yeh, who also co-wrote the series with Leigh Rubin, crafted a lighthearted, surreal world around its two title characters, blending gentle satire with a playful, indie-comics spirit. Though short-lived, the series stands as a charming artifact of late-80s alternative comics, showcasing Aragonés’s signature visual energy in a more narrative-driven setting than his MAD magazine work.
