In the mid-1980s, Renegade Press published normalman, a four-issue satire of superhero tropes from writer/artist Jim Valentino, with contributions from Cerebus creator Dave Sim. The series follows Norm, a perfectly average man who finds himself the sole non-powered being on a planet of ludicrously over-the-top heroes and villains, including Captain Everything and the Sophisticated Lady. Valentino’s affectionate parody pokes fun at comic conventions while carving out a cult-classic niche in independent comics.
