In the late 1960s, Italian publisher Ediperiodici launched Messalina, a long-running fumetti neri series that ran for 178 issues through 1974. Named for the infamous Roman empress, the comic blended historical costume drama with violent, erotic pulp, a signature of the genre. The series is most visually defined by the lush, painted covers of Carlo Jacono, alongside the interior work of artists like Pino Dangelico and Eros Kara.
