Mélody

Sylvie Rancourt's Mélody ran for six issues from 1985 to 1986, a raw, autobiographical comic that chronicled the daily life of a young woman working as a stripper in Montreal. Rancourt wrote and drew the series herself, bringing an unflinching, diaristic intimacy to a subject rarely depicted from a woman's perspective in the era's underground comix. Published outside the mainstream, Mélody stands as a pioneering work of confessional cartooning, notable for its matter-of-fact portrayal of sex work and its creator's singular, self-taught artistic voice.
