Lumikko

In 1984, the Finnish publisher Jalava released a single, self-contained album of Lumikko, a haunting European graphic novel written and illustrated by the acclaimed Belgian cartoonist Didier Comès, with Finnish translation by Soile Kaukoranta. A stark, monochrome tale set in the rural north, it stands as a distinctive entry in Comès’s celebrated body of work, known for its atmospheric, folkloric storytelling and expressive black-and-white art. Though it never continued beyond this one issue, Lumikko remains a notable artifact of 1980s European comics in Finnish translation, showcasing Comès’s singular vision to a Nordic audience.
