Little Nemo in Slumberland

Winsor McCay’s Little Nemo in Slumberland is a landmark of early comic art, first serialized in newspapers before being collected into a single 1909 hardcover volume by Cupples & Leon. This dream-world fantasy follows a young boy’s nightly adventures through a lavishly imaginative, surreal landscape, rendered in McCay’s signature ornate, Art Nouveau–inspired style. Though only one issue was published in this format, it remains a cornerstone of the medium, celebrated for its pioneering panel layouts, fluid storytelling, and breathtaking full-page illustrations that influenced generations of cartoonists.
