About the series
Louis Forton’s Les Pieds Nickelés (1915–1917, SPE) is a pioneering French comic series that introduced readers to the anarchic, scheming trio of Croquignol, Filochard, and Ribouldingue. Written and drawn primarily by Forton, the strip’s six-issue run captured the wartime era with sly, anti-authoritarian humor and a distinctly cynical, working-class voice. Its blend of slapstick and social satire laid early groundwork for the European comic strip tradition, making it a landmark of pre-bande dessinée storytelling.
