From 1848 to 1851, the French publisher Aubert produced Le Journal pour rire, a pioneering comic periodical that ran for 191 issues and helped define the era's satirical visual humor. The series is most closely associated with the extraordinary Gustave Doré, who was its most frequent contributor as both writer and artist, alongside key illustrators Edmond Morin and Nadar. Blending caricature, social commentary, and serialized comic strips, it stands as an essential precursor to the modern comic magazine, capturing the political and cultural turbulence of mid-19th-century France with wit and artistic flair.
