About the series
Christophe Blain’s two-issue Isaac the Pirate (2003–2004, NBM) follows a hapless 18th-century painter who, in a bid to escape his debts, is swept into a world of swashbuckling absurdity and philosophical misadventures. Blain, the series' writer and artist, brings his signature loose, expressive linework to this deadpan historical comedy, while Joe Johnson provides the English translation. A quietly influential gem of European graphic literature, it’s a witty, character-driven counterpoint to more bombastic pirate tales.
