Hugo

Milton Knight Jr. wrote and drew all three issues of this short-lived, early Fantagraphics series from the mid-1980s. Hugo follows the surreal, anarchic adventures of its title character alongside the tyrannical King Adolph the Eleventeenth and the elegant Princess Trish. Knight's dense, rubbery cartooning and absurdist humor made the series a distinctive artifact of the alternative-comics boom. It remains a cult favorite for fans of offbeat, creator-owned work from the era.
