Hate Annual

Over nine issues from 2001 to 2011, Fantagraphics’ Hate Annual revived Peter Bagge’s slacker antihero Buddy Bradley and his dysfunctional circle—including his brother Harold, wife Lisa, and old friend Jay—for a series of standalone satirical comics. Bagge, often joined by cartoonist Johnny Ryan, used the annual format to skewer modern life with his signature rubbery, expressive art and caustic humor, even roping in absurd guest stars like Bat Boy and Jake the Snake. A vital coda to Bagge’s landmark Hate series, these issues capture his sharp, unflinching take on adulthood, politics, and pop culture in the early 2000s.
