About the series
In 1989, DC Comics published this standalone prestige-format one-shot, the inaugural entry in its "Elseworlds" line, which reimagined Batman in a Victorian-era Gotham City. Writer Brian Augustyn and artist Michael Mignola crafted a taut murder mystery as the Dark Knight pursued Jack the Ripper through gaslit streets and corseted society. Its atmospheric, Mignola-illustrated take on a steampunk-infused 19th-century Batman proved so influential that it spawned a lasting franchise of sequels and spinoffs, cementing the story as a landmark in alternate-universe superhero comics.
