Frédéri le Gardian

Set in the sun-scorched Camargue region of France, Frédéri le Gardian follows the life of a young guardian of the wild white horses and black bulls. Published by Les Éditions du Triomphe from 1997 to 2006, this five-issue series was a passion project for creator Jacques Ferrandez, who both wrote and painted it. Known for his evocative watercolors, Ferrandez brought a painterly, deeply atmospheric realism to the story, capturing the harsh beauty of the marshlands and the traditions of the gardians. It stands as a quiet, lyrical tribute to a vanishing way of life, celebrated for its artistic integrity rather than superheroics.
