About the series
In the late 1990s, Jim Starlin and Stephen Platt brought a gritty, modern edge to the classic Fighting American for Awesome Entertainment. This three-issue miniseries, titled Dogs of War, follows the patriotic hero and his sidekick Johnny Flagg through a tense, action-packed conflict. Starlin’s sharp, politically charged storytelling combined with Platt’s detailed, explosive artwork gave the series a distinct, hard-hitting feel. It stands as a notable, if brief, revival of the character during the era’s wave of creator-driven, independent superhero comics.
