From 1983 to 1989, Escape Publishing’s Escape was a nine-issue anthology that served as a vital British alternative-comics showcase, blending bold new work with reprints of classic strips. Most closely associated with writer-artist Eddie Campbell, along with contributors Paul Gravett, Peter Stanbury, and David Lloyd, the series also featured reprints of Chester Gould’s hardboiled crime strips. It mattered as a key platform for emerging talent and a bridge between underground and mainstream sensibilities, capturing the raw energy of the UK small-press scene.
