In 1999, Kadokawa launched Angelic Layer, a five-issue comic series from the legendary all-female creative collective Clamp. The story introduces a near-future world where participants control highly detailed, battling dolls called "Angels" in a competitive arena sport, blending science fiction with emotional coming-of-age drama. As Clamp’s first foray into the "battle doll" subgenre, it laid thematic groundwork for their later, more expansive Chobits, while standing on its own as a sleek, character-driven action tale.
