About the series
In 2003 and 2004, DC Comics published Empire, a seven-issue series from writer Mark Waid and artist Barry Kitson that flips the superhero genre on its head. It follows a world where the villain has already won—a ruthless, super-powered dictator named Golgotha has conquered the planet and rules with an iron fist. Rather than a story of good versus evil, Empire is a tense, morally complex examination of power, paranoia, and the uneasy loyalty of a tyrant’s inner circle.
