Die Schachnovelle

In 2016, Knesebeck published a single-issue comic adaptation of Stefan Zweig's classic novella Die Schachnovelle, adapted by Anja Kootz and Thomas Humeau, who also handled the artwork. The story translates the psychological chess duel of the original text into a visual medium, capturing the tension between a cultured Viennese exile and a brutish Gestapo officer. This edition brings a celebrated work of European literature to a comics audience, with Humeau's expressive art enhancing the claustrophobic drama.
