Matthias Schultheiss adapts Charles Bukowski’s raw, semi-autobiographical prose into a starkly illustrated graphic novel for Heyne, launched in 1984. The single-issue story follows a down-and-out writer’s grueling days and nights in the underbelly of Los Angeles, rendered in Schultheiss’s moody, expressionistic black-and-white art. This collaboration captures Bukowski’s unflinching voice in a visual medium, offering a distinctive European take on the author’s gritty, autobiographical world.
