About the series
A lively, all-ages Western comic from the tail end of the Golden Age, Crackajack Funnies ran for 43 issues between 1938 and 1942 under the Western Publishing banner. Best remembered for featuring the debut of Red Ryder—along with his young sidekick Little Beaver—the series also starred cowboy film legend Tom Mix in original comic adventures. Regular contributors like Norman Marsh, Art Krenz, Frank Thomas, and Jim Chambers gave the book a consistent, rough-and-tumble energy that helped define the pre-war Western comic strip style. It remains a key artifact of the era when movie cowboys and original frontier heroes first galloped into four-color newsprint.
