In the pages of Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump, Terasawa Buichi’s Cobra (1978–1984) defined a sleek, adult-oriented space opera. This 18-issue series follows the titular space pirate, a cybernetically enhanced rogue with a psychogun for an arm, through a galaxy of femme fatales, alien threats, and high-stakes heists. Buichi’s lush, cinematic art and the character’s cool, amnesiac charm helped pioneer a more mature, stylish tone in shōnen manga, influencing the cyberpunk and space-western genres that followed. It remains a touchstone for its blend of hardboiled action and psychedelic sci-fi.
