About the series
The irreverent French anthology Charlie Spécial (1977–1978, Éditions du Square) was a short-lived but potent showcase for international comics talent, bridging the gap between underground experimentation and mainstream satire. Across its four oversized issues, the magazine featured the grotesque, visionary work of Guido Buzzelli, the sharp, satirical energy of Harvey Kurtzman, and the gritty, expressive linework of José Muñoz. A sibling publication to the celebrated Charlie Mensuel, it offered a more eclectic, adult-oriented platform for both European and American artists to push boundaries. Its brief run remains a cult touchstone for its fearless mix of styles and its snapshot of a pivotal moment in European comics publishing.
