About the series
From 2001 to 2008, Bries published four issues of Boerke, a wordless, deadpan Belgian comic by Pieter de Poortere. The series follows a simple, mustachioed farmer through a series of absurd, often darkly humorous misadventures, with each panel-driven story told entirely through expressive, minimalist art. Its silent, gag-a-page style and surreal, bleak comedy made it a distinctive and quietly influential work in the European alternative comics scene.
